The course aims to enable learners to understand the roles and responsibilities of those involved in supporting teaching and learning in schools, and provides an opportunity to develop the skills and. knowledge required to do this effectively and in a self-directed way. It prepares learners to support the Teacher and the delivery of curriculum within a school, as well as developing skills to help children and young people to develop self-esteem, independence and skills for learning.
Suitable for: The course is available to learners 16+ who are interested in working within a school, particularly in the role of a Teaching Assistant, Classroom Assistant or Learning Support Assistant

Información importante

Requisitos: Students must be 16 or over and have reasonable language and numeracy skills. Students must also arrange a 50 hour work placement within a school.

Course Contents


The course consists of 6 mandatory units:


Unit 1 Develop and maintain professional skills and knowledge for supporting teaching and learning in schools


Learners will develop their understanding of the roles involved in supporting teaching and learning in schools. They will engage in self-evaluation and reflection to enable them to learn and develop their own practice and identify their continuing professional development needs. They will look at the importance of equal opportunities and will implement strategies to support and promote equality and diversity within the setting. Additionally, learners will explore how to promote and contribute to the protection of children from abuse.


Unit 2 Develop and maintain effective working relationships for supporting teaching and learning in schools


In this unit, learners will develop their communication skills to assist them in building and promoting positive relationships with children, colleagues and other professionals. They will identify barriers to communication and how they might be overcome, as well as taking an active role in supporting and developing team effectiveness, including taking part in team meetings.


Unit 3 Contribute to the management of pupil Behaviour


Learners will explore the various stages of children’s social and emotional development and how these stages can impact upon Behaviour. They will implement agreed Behaviour management strategies to promote positive Behaviour and support children to manage their own Behaviour including responding to incidents of challenging Behaviour.



Unit 4 Contribute to pupils’ learning


Learners will look at legislation and policy relating to schools. In particular, they will explore the health and safety factors, standards and resources relating to children. This unit will also help learners to provide support to the teachers and pupils engaged in the process of teaching and learning. It will assist them in preparing and maintaining the learning environment, identifying what they need to

do to support planned learning activities and encourage independent learning. It will support learners to carry out observations of children’s performance, providing the agreed support and giving feedback to the Teacher on progress made by the children.



Unit 5 Support pupils with special educational needs or disabilities


Learners will examine areas of educational need including additional learning needs and special educational needs. They will explore the meaning of inclusion and the statementing process as well as the types of difficulties that pupils with special educational needs may encounter. Learners will devise

and carry out strategies for supporting pupils with special educational needs.


Unit 6 Support the development and application of pupils’ literacy, numeracy and ICT skills


In this unit, learners will implement strategies to help whole-class, group and individual pupils with the development and application of their literacy, numeracy and ICT skills. Working under the direction of the Teacher, learners will support pupils during activities to aid their developing knowledge, understanding and skills, and provide feedback to the Teacher and pupils on progress and contributions to the activities undertaken.

Course Accreditation

This course provides successful students with a qualification from TQUK, regulated by Ofqual. TQUK is an Awarding Organisation recognised by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) in England and by the Welsh Government.


This is a knowledge based qualification suitable for support roles in schools, including site staff, administrators etc as well as those who work directly with children and young people.


This qualification seeks to develop the knowledge and understanding that all those working in a school setting will need and covers areas such as safeguarding, communication and understanding the school context. 

Please Note: a work placement of at least 50 hours is required to complete this option.

Study Method


The course is designed for study by distance learning at work or at home.  Students receive course manual, assignments and studyguide plus tutor support by mail and email.  You can start at any time and plan your studies over a period of up to one year from the time of enrolment.  In addition, students of this NCFE qualification will need to arrange and undertake a work placement of a minimum of 50 hours during their course



Students are required to compile a portfolio of evidence which demonstrates their learning against each of the assessment criteria of the course.  Portfolios are assessed by a tutor.  Some portfolio evidence will need to be witnessed in the workplace hence students must arrange and complete a work experience placement.
