The purpose of the course is to provide translators with a general view of the main drafting rules currently used by English speaking lawyers. Plain English guidelines will contribute to help translators interpret many old-fashioned drafted contents in documents. They will also provide linguistic tools to facilitate the translation tasks. By recognizing poor drafting it is easier to find the best possible rendering when translating. This course will also provide useful hints as to which syntactic structures and lexical items should be used to abide by Plain English Standards. This may be

Theory will be discussed and the opinion of many legal drafters will be explained during the course.
During this course participants will have the chance of redrafting well known sample archaic instruments (excerpts from corporate documents, contracts in general, boilerplate clauses, court papers) using Plain English Standards and will have a Before and an After version of those paragraphs discussed. The focus will be on editing tasks as a prior step to enhance translation quality standards to apply both in Eng-Span or Span-Eng translations. Further, translation exercises will be based on plain editing so that participants may see how to work out the way through clutters.
