If you’re interested in a career in construction when you leave school but aren’t sure whether you wish to follow the craft route or the building services route, this course is ideal for you. If you choose to study the building services pathway, you’ll gain an introduction to both plumbing and electrical installation. If you choose the construction pathway, you’ll learn about bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, plastering, ground-works, electrical installation, and plumbing. These skills will be developed both in college workshops and projects outside College.

What you will Study In classroom sessions you will look at the sector and gain an insight into the employment opportunities that are available. You’ll study health & safety to ensure that your working practices are safe. You’ll also develop your team building skills. Maths and English are key elements of any full-time programme of study in College. If you do not already have a GCSE at grade A*-C in these subjects, you will need to attend sessions allocated on your timetable. These are varied and designed to cater for all ability levels. You will receive advice and guidance regarding the correct level for you. Skills in Maths and English will support your full-time course, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future. Most employers are looking for ability in these areas and the majority of university courses require you to have Maths and English GCSEs at A*-C. This is why the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study
How you will Learn The course is 60% practical work and 40% theory work and you will learn through demonstrations, and activities in the classroom and workshop.
How you will be Assessed Assessment is continuous throughout the year. Your learning will be extended to outside of College with trips to local suppliers or construction sites and places of interest.
