Minimum of three GCSE passes at Grade D.
You should be a motivated individual who is able to demonstrate an awareness of music, and have the ability to play and perform on any instrument at a basic level and competence.
The study of music to GCSE level is an advantage. The ability to read music is not essential.
You will be required to attend an interview where you will be expected to perform two prepared audition pieces to demonstrate your music ability. The audition piece should be approximately three minutes long and demonstrate a range of styles e.g. rock or punk, and different techniques e.g. tapping/finger picking.
You will be required to demonstrate your commitment to developing your instrumental skills by agreeing to use a given practice routine if accepted on the course.
Information about the course
A full-time, 1-year course for musicians, who demonstrate potential, but who have not yet had the opportunity to develop the skills required for entry onto the National Diploma in Music Practice or have not achieved the 4 GCSEs at grade C or above needed for entry to the National Diploma.
Exploring the music profession/ Planning and creating a musical product. This part of the course allows students to find out about all aspects of the music business, from artist recruitment through to contract law, session musician and freelance work. Also, the students get the chance to record their work using professional recording techniques and equipment.
Solo musical performance
This is where the students get the chance to study their instrument with a professional musician. We currently have the opportunity to study Guitar, Bass, Drums and Vocals. If a student's first instrument is other than the one listed above, they will be asked to pick a second instrument for the purposes of this unit.
Working as a musical ensemble/Rehersal techniques for musicians
This is where students have the chance to work in a band situation throughout the year, culminating in their final performances. Here at West Herts Music Dept. we aim to have at least three perfromances a year, which will be assessed against the BTEC criteria, giving the students as much opportunity for live performance as possible. This unit will help them to learn good commication techniques when working as ensemble, building repertoire, performance skills, and planning appropriately for rehearsals and live performances.
This unit gives students more theoretical knowledge regarding music in areas such as form and structure in different genres of music, the development of musical pieces with regard to rhythm, tonality and harmony. The students will also learn about differernt types of notations used in different situations.
Musical instrument required. City and Guilds key skills examinations taken in either IT or communications
Completion of this course will lead to a Level 2 qualification, equivalent to 4 GCSEs at Grade C. Essentially a vocational course, it helps develop a broad range of skills, which will prepare you for progression to the BTEC National Diploma in Music Practice.
